Plan for Memorial Weekend Traffic Delays to Airport

– Memorial Day weekend closure of 2 miles of Highway 280 may challenge Piedmont drivers. –

Beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday, May 22,  southbound Highway 280 is closed from 6th Street at King Street to the Pennsylvania on-ramp at Cesar Chavez in San Francisco. Caltrans expects to reopen the highway no later than 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27.

This closure may delay trips to the San Francisco airport as traffic shifts from 280 to Highway 101.

Several stages are involved in the replacement of the overpass hinge. The old concrete will be demolished, the hinge will be removed, a new hinge will be be installed and the freshly poured concrete must have time to cure. There will be subsequent night southbound lane closures to install concrete guard rails and joint seals. Northbound lanes will be closed over the July 4 and Labor Day holiday weekends.

Will it affect driving to Giants games?

It may also impact Piedmont drivers attending the weekend baseball games between the San Francisco Giants and the Minnesota Twin and the Giants-Cubs game on Memorial Day. Traffic will be rerouted onto local streets south of Market.
