OPINION: Draft Housing Element Comment
Garrett Keating, former member of the Piedmont City Council, evaluated parts of the Draft Housing Element being considered by the Piedmont Planning Commission at their Special Meeting on May 12, 2022.
The recommended changes by Mr. Garrett are very cogent and detailed.
The key take away I have from his recommendations is how one person’s applied time and energy can produce such a thoughtful insights in such a limited time. (The plan was published just a few weeks ago.) Not everyone can devote scores of hours, on such short notice, to analyze 374 page plan.
So, let’s be reasonable and respectful of the current Citizens of Piedmont and extend the time for their review and feedback.
The current timeline, found here, is based on submitting our plan by December 2022. California extended the deadline until May 2023. Let’s extend the Citizen review and comment period accordingly (i.e. by 5 months).

Thanks Dai. I attended most of the workshops and have knowledge of the housing element from my days on City Council. You are correct- the city should extend the comment period. And conduct a direct mail/online survey now that the draft is out for public comment.
