Piedmont Student Jasper Zietlow Named 2023 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist

The Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) is proud to announce Piedmont High School senior, Jasper Zietlow, is among the approximately 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists for 2023. These students will be considered for 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28-million to be awarded this spring.

“I am delighted to be named a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist,” Zietlow said. “Learning has always been the greatest motivator for me and I look forward to continuing to grow academically and personally.”

“Congratulations to Jasper on this recognition for his outstanding work in the classroom,” added PUSD Interim Superintendent, Dr. Donald Evans. “Today’s 12th-graders have gone through a lot in their high school careers and we are proud to see our students continue to achieve despite the challenges brought by the pandemic.”

Over a million high school juniors were considered for the 68th National Merit Scholarship Program through their performance on the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and their high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

In addition to Zietlow being named a Semifinalist, eight Piedmont High School students were named National Merit Commended Students. More than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. PHS students named National Merit Scholarship Commended Students for 2023 are:

  • Alexander Aubrecht
  • Benjamin Kra-Caskey
  • Hamza Mahood
  • Evan Manolis
  • Quinn Reilly
  • Julia Shalev
  • Russell Tan
  • Chelsea Yi

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2023. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 950 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 180 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located.

In addition, about 160 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 3,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution. National Merit Scholarship winners of 2023 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 368,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title. Visit www.nationalmerit.org for more information.

The candidates are listed below in alphabetical order along with their photographs and ballot statements.

Shirley Hooi

Shirley Hooi

Entrepreneur/Businesswoman/Mother

My education and qualifications are: COVID-related online learning has forced PUSD students to endure an unprecedented period of educational losses and mental stress. Now is a crucial period to help our students get back on track. I believe that parent, student and community member involvement in school board decisions is critical. Their opinions should be considered in the selection of the superintendent, along with issues regarding school curriculum and teacher retention/recruitment. As a product of the Oakland Unified School District, PUSD was regarded as the epitome of an exceptional public school education. Families strived to move to Piedmont to raise their children in a community in which a public school education was comparable to the local private schools. Unfortunately this has changed and PUSD continues to lose students to local private schools every year. My immigrant parents instilled in their children the belief of education and hard work as a path out of poverty. Now as a PUSD parent, it is my role to instill the same beliefs upon my children. If you support this philosophy, now is the time for me to be your voice on the school board. Get Involved: www.shirleyhooi.com

Ruchi Medhekar

Ruchi Medhekar

Healthcare Executive/Parent

My education and qualifications are: I’m running for school board for four primary reasons: i) to strengthen district academics at all grade levels, ii) to foster curiosity and creative thinking in our students; iii) to strengthen positive relationships between teachers, administrators, and parents; and iv) to provide equitable opportunities that promote students’ emotional well-being. I have benefited tremendously from a strong STEAM education – graduating from MIT with undergraduate degrees in biology and chemical engineering, and a PhD in microbiology from UCLA. Currently, I work for a healthcare IT company, responsible for product and strategy. I grew up in the Bay Area and have lived in Piedmont since 2016. My husband is a local physician, and our daughters are in kindergarten and 4th grade at Beach. I’ve volunteered in many capacities at Beach, for PUSD, and our city: as classroom parent, VP and president of the Beach Parents Organization, on the Tri-School Site Council, Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) Committee, and the district’s Budget Advisory Committee. I am on the board of the Piedmont Education Foundation and on the Piedmont Recreation Commission. These opportunities have helped me understand the needs of different stakeholders in the district, which will be invaluable in achieving my goals.

Lindsay Thomasson

Lindsay Thomasson

Parent

My education and qualifications are: As the parent of students currently at PMS, Havens, and in preschool, I have held numerous volunteer roles over the past five years, giving me a robust understanding of how our district works, its strengths and weaknesses. I served as Havens’ Parent Club President, on the LCAP Committee, Superintendent Community Advisory Committee, and Wellness Center Committee, to name a few. As a member of PUSD’s Board of Education, my priorities would be to ensure PUSD has the leadership and resources to provide students an excellent, well-rounded academic experience, including the hiring of a superintendent aligned in our goals, and attracting and retaining well-qualified, diverse, engaged educators. This will allow PUSD to truly equip students with the essential critical-thinking, STEAM, and language arts skills needed to succeed at the universities and in the careers of their choosing. I have attended California public schools my entire life, culminating in degrees from Cal Berkeley and UCSD. Piedmont schools are the foundation of our community, yet the past three years have been divisive. To move forward we must engage in meaningful community dialogue, be pragmatic and creative, ensure all stakeholders are engaged in our decision-making processes, and always put students first

Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) School Board Names Dr. Donald Evans Interim Superintendent for 2022-23 School Year (Piedmont, Ca., June 22, 2022) –

The Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) will turn to a local and experienced educator to lead the organization through the 2022-23 school year. At its June 22 meeting, the PUSD Board of Education announced the appointment of Dr. Donald Evans as Interim Superintendent for the upcoming school year, replacing current Superintendent, Randall Booker, who accepted the Superintendent position with the San Mateo Union High School District last month.

Dr. Evans will serve under a one-year contract beginning July 1, 2022, while the District conducts a nationwide search for its next permanent Superintendent. Dr. Evans is a familiar face among education circles in Alameda County, having served as Superintendent for the Berkeley Unified School District for six years (2013-19) and Hayward Unified for two years (2011-13).

With over 30 years of experience in education, Dr. Evans announced his retirement in July 2019, but was intrigued by the opportunity to spend a year with PUSD.

“Throughout my time in Alameda County, I have heard of and witnessed the work and accomplishments of students and staff in Piedmont and developed a great respect for the environment and culture of learning and success that has been built here,” Dr. Evans said. “I am excited to see this work first-hand and help the District in any way I can through this transition period.”

“We are thrilled to bring Dr. Evans’ insight and experience to PUSD as its Interim Superintendent,” added PUSD Board President, Cory Smegal. “He will bring an understanding of Piedmont, a commitment to excellence and a collaborative spirit that will be instrumental to continuing the District’s success as we conduct the search for our next Superintendent. We thank Dr. Evans for making this one year commitment to our students, staff and community.”

Dr. Evans began his teaching career with the San Diego Unified School District in 1988 at Silver Gate Elementary School where he taught fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. During his 10-year tenure in San Diego, he also served as a GATE teacher, a teacher coach, and a vice principal. Dr. Evans also served as a principal at Burckhalter Elementary School in Oakland and was the first principal of the East Palo Alto Charter School in the Ravenswood City School District.

As Elementary School Area Superintendent for the Oakland Unified School District, he spearheaded the District’s successful effort to implement all-day kindergarten. He also played an instrumental role in the professional development of elementary school administrators.

Prior to his first Superintendent position with Hayward Unified, Dr. Evans served as the Associate Superintendent of Secondary Education with the Compton Unified School District for three years, where he led the effort to bring in advanced high school courses and to expand the music program.

Throughout his career, Dr. Evans has focused extensively on curriculum and professional development. More recently, he has led numerous trainings on the conversion to the Common Core State Standards, with a focus on providing professional development to support administrators in the transition. He was the recipient of the 2018 Marcus Foster Educator of the Year Award from the California Association of African-American Superintendents.

Dr. Evans earned his Doctorate in 2010 from the Graduate School of Education at the University of California-Berkeley, in association with the Leadership in Educational Equity Program. He received his Masters of Education from United States International University, and his Bachelors of Arts from the University of Delaware. Dr. Evans is originally from Lewes, Delaware, and currently resides in Oakland.

Dr. Evans will assume his position with PUSD on Friday, July 1.

The District will announce meet and greet opportunities for the community as soon as they are scheduled. Over the summer and fall, the Board will select a Superintendent search firm to coordinate the search process for its next permanent Superintendent. Stakeholder meetings will take place in the fall to gather input from students, staff, families and the community. The Superintendent position will be posted in the winter with interviews to take place in the winter/spring. PUSD’s next Superintendent will be named in the spring and will assume their new position on July 1, 2023.

The Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) filled its remaining school site administrator position with the hiring of Angela Barrett as new Assistant Principal of Piedmont Middle School. Barrett will replace Karyn Shipp, who will assume the Principal position of PMS on July 1.

“I am excited to join the students, staff and families at Piedmont Middle School,” Barrett said. “I am dedicated to supporting Piedmont as we work toward providing all students with an equitable and high quality educational experience. It is an honor to join this amazing community, and I look forward to getting to know you all.”

“Ms. Barrett was the clear choice during the application/interview process and we are thrilled to bring her experience and passion to Piedmont Middle School,” added PUSD Superintendent, Randall Booker. “Already well-established and familiar with the role, she will fit right in to what this great school is working to build and accomplish for its students and staff.”

An experienced teacher and administrator, Barrett comes to PUSD from the Nea Community Learning Center in Alameda, where she has served as assistant principal during the past school year and assisted with operations, staff, parent outreach, and professional development, in addition to working as high school discipline lead, grade 6-12 gradebook lead, and organizing the shift to mastery grading for Nea’s upper division team.

Barrett spent the previous three years as Vice Principal at Envision Academy High School in Oakland where she was the point person for facilities & on-campus school safety, technology and state testing, led regular professional development sessions, and worked with teachers for coaching, data analysis and classroom observations.

Barrett has several years of experience in the classroom as an English teacher at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, and as Lead Teacher at City Arts and Technology High School in Oakland. She describes herself as a passionate educator, excited to learn, grow and connect with students and the community. “I am an educational leader who understands the importance of working with others, as well as when it is time to take initiative in the best interest of students and the community we serve. I am ready to take my leadership experience in this exciting new direction that allows me to support all students to succeed.”

Barrett will assume her new role on July 1.
